  1. _ It pleased God in his eternal purpose, to chuse and ordain the Lord Jesus his only begotten Son, according to the Covenant made between them both, (a) to be the Mediator between God and Man; the (b) Prophet, (c) Priest and (d) King; Head and Saviour of his Church, the heir of all things, and judge of the world: Unto whom he did from all Eternity (e) give a people to be his seed, and to be by him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified.

    3. Hebrews 5:5-6 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made a high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

    5. Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

      John 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

  2. _ The Son of God, the second Person in the Holy Trinity, being very and eternal God, the brightness of the Fathers glory, of one substance and equal with him: who made the World, who upholdeth and governeth all things he hath made: did when the fullness of time was come take unto him (a) mans nature, with all the Essential properties, and common infirmities thereof, (b) yet without sin: being conceived by the Holy Spirit in the Womb of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Spirit coming down upon her, and the power of the most High overshadowing her, (c) and so was made of a Woman, of the Tribe of Judah, of the Seed of Abraham, and David according to the Scriptures: So that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures, were inseparably joined together in one Person: without conversion, composition, or confusion: which Person is very God, and very Man; yet one (d) Christ, the only Mediator between God and Man.

    1. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

    2. Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

      Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

      Hebrews 2:16-17 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

      Hebrews 4:15 For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

  3. _ The Lord Jesus in his humane nature thus united to the divine, in the Person of the Son, was sanctified, & anointed (a) with the Holy Spirit, above measure; having in him (b) all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; in whom it pleased the Father that (c) all fullness should dwell: To the end that being (d) holy, harmless, undefiled, and full (e) of Grace, and Truth, he might be throughly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator, and (f) Surety; which office he took not upon himself, but was thereunto (g) called by his Father; who also put (h) all power and judgement in his hand, and gave him Commandement to execute the same.

    1. Psalms 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

      Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

  4. _ This office the Lord Jesus did most (a) willingly undertake, which that he might discharge he was made under the Law, (b) and did perfectly fulfill it, and underwent the (c) punishment due to us, which we should have born and suffered, being made (d) Sin and a Curse for us: enduring most grievous sorrows (e) in his Soul; and most painful sufferings in his body; was crucified, and died, and remained in the state of the dead; yet saw no (f) corruption: on the (g) third day he arose from the dead, with the same (h) body in which he suffered; with which he also (i) ascended into heaven: and there sitteth at the right hand of his Father, (j) making intercession; and shall (k) return to judge Men and Angels, at the end of the World.

    1. Psalms 40:7-8 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

      Hebrews 10:5-11 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

      John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

  6. _ Although the price of Redemption was not actually paid by Christ, till after his Incarnation, (a) yet the vertue, efficacy, and benefit thereof were communicated to the Elect in all ages successively, from the beginning of the World, in and by those Promises, Types, and Sacrifices, wherein he was revealed, and signified to be the Seed of the Woman, which should bruise the Serpents head; (b) and the Lamb slain from the foundation of the World: (c) Being the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

  8. _ To all those for whom Christ hath obtained eternal redemption, he doth certainly, and effectually (a) apply, and communicate the same; making intercession for them, uniting them to himself by his spirit, (b) revealing unto them, in and by the word, the mystery of salvation; perswading them to believe, and obey; (c) governing their hearts by his word and spirit, and (d) overcoming all their enemies by his Almighty power, and wisdom; in such manner, and wayes as are most consonant to his wonderful, and (e) unsearchable dispensation; and all of free, and absolute Grace, without any condition foreseen in them, to procure it.
